Mo from Un-Mainstream Mom Reads tagged me for the 7 Random Things About Me meme.  

I love randomness, so this is a fantastic meme for me. But I’m posting this about 2 weeks after being tagged *sorry* however my lateness makes a perfect entry for #1 in this list.

 

 

1. Lateness, putting things off, generally being a slacker – that’s me! No matter how easy something is or how necessary it is, I have the tendency to set things aside for later. Which is totally at odds with my impatient nature. Example – I will pile the laundry room full to the ceiling with dirty clothes, telling myself it makes no sense to do a small load. Then I have to spend an entire weekend doing laundry in my bathing suit or some abysmal outfit from the 80’s (because of course there’s nothing in the closet!)
   
   
2. About two years ago I quit smoking cold-turkey with no problems, in an effort to be a healthier person. Knowing how alot of women gain weight when quitting, I made sure to exercise more and eat NO junk food. A year later I had gained 40 pounds!! I am positive this 40 pounds was straight from the devil, no amount of working out got rid of it. I watched what I ate even closer. No result – the chub stayed. I’m totally not a vain person, but I could not deal with not having any clothes that fit right. So I started smoking again – it was either that or lose my mind. Moral of the story – don’t start smoking ever!
   
   
3. I don’t like my food to touch on my plate. Ever. I have no idea why. I also eat my food in a certain order. Thanksgiving dinner is a time honoured tradition – potatoes first, followed by squash, turnip, parsnip, carrots and sweet potatoes. Then turkey, stuffing and sweetbread. Cranberries and asparagus are last. It’s been this way as long as I can remember. My family still looks at me funny.
   
   
4. My family is very traditional not by choice but I think rather by luck, you would have to go into third or fourth cousins to find a divorced couple. Although I call my partner ‘hubs’ we aren’t actually married, neither of us believe that a marriage licence would make our union any stronger or more important than it is now. We wear wedding rings, do all the other things couples do, and that’s really all that matters to us. Our relationship has outlasted most of the people around us. Our family and friends are very accepting and respectful of our decision and consider us to be a married couple despite the missing paperwork.
   
   
5. Speaking of un-traditional, I don’t tend to conform to the expected appearance of the average mom. I’ve always been experimental with my hair, so sometimes I change my haircolor every month. I’ve got 11 earlobe piercings, a cartilage ring, piercings in my lower lip called ‘snake bites’ and a vertical belly bar. I’ve a tattoo on my bicep and two more in progress. Gimme an hour and I clean up well though :)
   
   
6. My great grandparents lived on a farm, and growing up I spent most of my weekends there. I loved running around the barn and the fields. I named all the cows, snuck the horse apples, and brought the wild barn cats into the house every chance I got. I loved all the animals. The giant evil rooster was a different story, he followed me around pecking at me and making horrible squawking sounds – he scared the crap out of me! So one day I snuck up behind him and booted him right in the ass. He was never the same again. But I still don’t feel bad, seriously, this rooster was evil!
   
   
7. My first and middle names are Joanne Elizabeth, I have disliked this name since I was about 10. I always wanted to be a Fiona or Siobhan or Iona. No one has ever called me Joanne though, I’ve always been Jo. School was difficult because the staff never used nicknames, so the teacher would be taking attendance and get to me, “Joanne? Joanne?” So used to being called Jo, I never even realized the teacher meant me. Now that I’m in my 30’s I’m content with my name.

Open the closest book to you, not your favourite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, to page 56. Write out the fifth sentence, as well as two to five sentences following.

And I reach out and grab the book sitting on the plant stand beside me, and it is Just After Sunset by Stephen King. It is his newest collection of short stories and I’ve gotten about halfway through so far this weekend.

There was no time to waste congratulating herself, and not just because she might hear the Pillbox’s front door open anytime. She had other problems. Her muscles were strained and trembling from trying to walk in what was almost a sitting position; she felt like an out-of-condition amateur attempting some outrageous Tantra yoga position. If she didn’t do this at once, she wouldn’t be able to do it at all. And if the chair was as strong as it looked — But she pushed this thought away.
