☢ I’d Rather Drink Toxic Sludge… ☢

I’d  rather drink toxic sludge than have to deal with spam again!

My blog got hit by spam, within a few hours I had received over 200 spam comments that link to two specific sites selling ‘supposedly legit’ merchandise. So instead of a relaxing Saturday afternoon I spent most of the morning deleting this crap. I totally hate word verification for comments, so instead I’ve got comment moderation on – which is a total pain in the ass, but I really don’t want this to happen again :(

So I’m pretty cranky right now, and I really want to rant – tried to explain to hubs why I was so growly, but he doesn’t blog and the most he knows about spam is that I yell at him when he turns his email spam filter off :P

I think the biggest issue I have with spam is that logically it wouldn’t be such a problem after all these years if they weren’t getting results, right? So who are these people that click on spam comments and buy stuff from companies/people/sites that use this type of marketing? Common sense tells me that the hundreds of emails sitting in my junk mail folder advertising magic penis enlarging potions and female sex drive supplements are not exactly something I would buy online, let alone put into my body!

And when I see links to websites telling me I can buy top of the line brand name clothing for a quarter of the original price, it’s obvious that they’re imposters – ya know the mega awesome $300 Nike shoes that look just like the real thing but actually have a .0003% angle modification on the trademarked Nike swoosh *sigh* It makes me feel bad to think this, but honestly in my opinion the people who respond to spam are probably worse than the spammers themselves. Seriously if you want to wear the latest fashion trend but can’t afford it, suck it up and get over yourself. That sparkly looking bling you wear might look like the real thing, but honey if it leaves that gross looking green gunk on your skin you just look like a skank who got ripped off.

Okay, I think I feel better now :)

That’s the last you’ll hear of me complaining about spam and the suckers who fall for it. So a big f*ck you to all the spammers out there!

And I refuse to give their sites any more traffic by including text that could lead to their names, so I quickly photo-shopped up a graphic to let you know which sites were linked to in all the spam comments I had to delete – let’s do what we can to avoid supporting sites like these and their disgusting marketing tactics.

Now onto things that make smile: like big stacks of books, Poppets reading, and Modest Mouse!

Modest Mouse! They definitely make everything better :D

I'm sorry you had to deal with this, Joanne...that would drive me crazy too. But hey, at least you wrote an awesome post about it :D I just love your sense of humour. And seriously...who on earth falls for spam?

OMG, I feel terrible that you lost your Saturday afternoon to spammers, but I laughed my arse off while reading this post.

Also, thanks for the Modest Mouse add. I heart them!

So far, I've been lucky and the spam filter on my blog has caught all of my spam (knock on wood). It's easy to just delete it all then.

Yes, I saw all the messages that came in from the posts I was subscribed to. I totally feel your pain as I was hit three times. I didn't set my blog on moderation until after the second round. I figured once was all I was going to get. Same person or computer program came back the third time, but by then I changed my settings.

I thought the comment moderation would be a bigger deal than it was. Now that I am in the habit of approving, it's no biggie. The only negative is the numbers of comments have decreased big time. Oh well. The alternative isn't worth it.

I'm sorry to hear you were hit by the spam. I'm lucky enough not to be that well known, or get that much traffic, so I haven't had to deal with it. Just so you know, your post totally made me giggle and I totally agree with you about the people that actually play into what the spammers offer. They are much worse than the spammers themselves because they are continously fueling the cause. *sigh* I'm afraid some people are just plain dumb and will never learn.

I have had the same issue with people selling junk (like made in china blinking car and plastic watches) in the paris subway. They always get wondering 'WHO buys this crap?'. Well apparently, some people do..

I really need to listen to Modest Mouse. I know several people that love them!

I hate spam, too. So annoying!

I added comment moderation for older posts. I figure it is pretty easy to clean up a couple of recent posts as spam, but not ALL of them.

I hate spam. I had to do word verification, the thing I hate the most, but I had to or have a bunch of spam. I never heard of those companies either.

I love those poppets reading!

I love modest mouse and poppets reading :) I got the blue poppet reading and I just LOVE it! I hate spammers with a passion too on the other hand...the other day I went to empty my akismet spam blocker on Wordpress and there were over 1,000 spam messages in there!!! Isn't that ridiculous?? I feel your pain.

Sorry about the spam. I had some spammer hit about 60 of my posts a week or so ago, which is why I went to word verification. And I agree that someone somewhere must be responding to them or it would make no sense for spam to continue.

I had the same problem recently and went back to word verification, which is a pain, to see if it would help, and fingers crossed, so far it has. Otherwise I'll do moderation. I was wondering the same thing. WHO clicks on those? I'd go out of my way not to do business there. Sigh.

Haha! I LOVE this post (but not the fact that you got spammed). I used to subscribe to follow up comments here, so I had several comment emails in my inbox from your spammer. :) I'm sure it wasn't funny to you, though. I'm at work, so I don't have access to the Modest Mouse. :(

Ahhhhhh poppets...so much better than spammers. Did you get any of the reading poppets? I have the blue one. Don't tell the others, but he's my favorite.

Sorry about the spam :(

If it makes you feel better, I've been using the common sense graphic as a desktop background because it rocks :)

Spammers should be electrocuted by their keyboards. I didn't get hit that hard but that ed guy paid me a visit not that long ago and I spent nearly an hour getting rid of them all.
